The role of packet-dropping mechanisms in QoS differentiation

چکیده
Many research teams are developing technologies to turn the Internet into a QoS-capable network, which is one of the biggest challenges that this communication system currently faces. Naturally, at the core of such a challenge are IP routers and the technology they use. It is a well known fact that the common packet scheduling discipline that is used in routers (first come first served) makes them useless when QoS is needed. Thus, a different type of packet scheduling must be used. One of the most referred solutions for QoS-capable systems is the Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) discipline. For FreeBSDbased routers, the ALTQ implementation of the WFQ discipline is, of course, an eligible and natural choice. Given this, it is important to fully understand the characteristics and operational behaviour of such an

Computing the loss differentiation parameters of the proportional differentiation service model
The proportional differentiation service model has emerged as a refined version of the DiffServ qualify of service (QoS) architecture. It relies on a series of parameters to enforce proportionally differentiated QoS criteria, such as queueing delay and packet loss. From the perspective of proportional loss differentiation, a large amount of work has been done on carrying out loss differentiatio...

Active Queue Management (AQM) plays an important role in the Internet congestion control. It tries to enhance congestion control, and to achieve tradeoff between bottleneck utilization and delay. Random Early Detection (RED) is the most popular active queue management algorithm that has been implemented in the in Internet routers and is trying to supply low delay and low packet loss. متن کاملSupport for predictability and relative service differentiation using selective packet dropping
In spite of the availability of sophisticated network quality of service (QoS) guaranteeing mechanisms, it is apparent that a large number of applications will continue using the best effort service class. The main reason for this is that the QoS guaranteeing mechanisms are complex and many applications are not capable of using these complex services. At the same time, the standard best effort ...
متن کاملA Fuzzy Based Three Color Meter/Marker for Diffserv Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
Differentiated Services (Diffserv) which was proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is a scalable and robust model for providing the end-to-end QoS. In the Diffserv networks, metering mechanisms are used to measure traffic stream. The single rate Three Color Meter (srTCM) [1],which was proposed by IETF, meters an IP packet stream and marks its packets either green, yellow, or red....
